PARCEL FEE

The Lafourche Parish Fire Protection District 8-C imposes a $45.00 Parcel Fee on homeowners and business owners in the fire district. These funds are used to supports the ongoing operations of the Chackbay Fire Department.

Currently, the Parcel Fee generates roughly $99,000 each year. These funds are used for the purchase and upkeep of fire stations, apparatus, equipment, hose, PPE, maintenance, fuel, etc. These funds are extremely important being they are the only reliable source of income for the Fire Department.

FAQs

What do the funds collected from the Parcel Fee go towards?
The monies collected from the Parcel Fee are used to fund the ongoing operations of the Chackbay Fire Department. This includes the purchase and upkeep of fire stations, apparatus, equipment, hose, PPE, maintenance, fuel, etc.
How important is the Parcel Fee to the Fire District?
The Parcel Fee is the only guaranteed source of income for the Fire District. While the Fire Department holds an annual fair and small fundraisers, those are ultimately very dependent on weather and participation and are not reliable sources of income. The Fire Department could not survive without the Parcel Fee.
Is there a specific law that gives Fire District 8-C the authority to collect a Parcel Fee?
Yes, R.S. 40:1505 gives the district the right to levy and collect a parcel fee within the boundaries of Fire District 8-C. To view this statue, click the link: http://www.legis.la.gov/Legis/Law.aspx?d=97631

When does the public get a chance to vote on the renewal of the Parcel Fee?
The Parcel Fee was originally voted on and approved in 2005 for a term of 10 years. On October 24, 2015 the Parcel Fee was approved again for another 10 years. The Fire District is currently asking voters to approve an increase to $75.00/year on the November 3, 2020 election. If approved by the voters, the Parcel Fee will be renewed at the increased rate for another 10 years.
What can I do if I do not live in Fire District 8-C and received a Parcel Fee on my tax notice?
Please send an email to: contact@chackbayfire.com and explain your situation. A representative will be in touch with you shortly thereafter.
Can I attend a Fire District 8-C meeting?
Yes, all Fire District meetings are open to the public and follow state mandated open meeting laws. Upcoming meeting dates and agendas can be found HERE. A copy of our meeting agenda is also published in the Daily Comet at least one week before each meeting.
